St. Paul
I did not know that the author came from St. Paul:
Right next to this park there’s the old Libary, a very impressive building:

Sculpture Garden (Walker Art Center)
A short trip to the sculpture garden of the Walker Art Center today..

(proof of the fact that art only becomes art by the means of human interaction)

The real baker

This is Pierre VEIS – he is producing real bread, based on old recipes. You can find him on markets in the south of france and on the festival in Andilly, every year.

I’ll post the pictures I took yesterday in a series, starting with the daylight ones, then the ones I took at night.

First pics with the new phone
Yes I know, MP is not everything and the small lens can’t compare to a real light tunnel but still! Here are the first pictures I took with the N8

All Fribourg, and as you can see by the trash bags standing around: Taken on trash day, Tuesday or Friday.
Weather
It took me to live in the alps to understand the link between warm weather, water, wind and thunderstorms..probably because we can’t see the weather being made where I grew up (our weather in northern germany is made in iceland, I think). However here, in the Alps, we make our weather ourselves! The sun shines, the rivers and lakes start to make clouds and then, in the late afternoon, the thunderstorm is there. Handmade, while we’re watching and sipping coffee ![]()
It’s not always that spectacular, but I’m impressed anyways.

You can see the rain rushing in (and the neighbor rushing out to fetch the kids)

And then the rain was there..

Before/after: iPhone images and Lightroom
Yesterday I was shopping and took a picture of these fish with the iPhone:
To show the effects of Adobe Lightroom I went through the workflow with it:
The quality is not overwhelming from the start, but the image after Lightroom does look better
From Spring to Summer
Spring was amazingly warm in our area, so warm that it felt like summer. We’ve been to the lake of Annecy already and had the first thunderstorms, the grass has been cut by the farmers already once..

Izieu
The “children of Izieu” have been deported (and subsequently murdered) just before the end of WW II – one of a series of last acts of barbary of nazi germany towards their “enemies”. It’s difficult to be in a place which is so beautiful and link that to this unbelievable level of cruelty.

Strange Visitor
This thing was flying in front of our door today and feasting on the flowers:
Thanks to the intratubes I was able to identify it as “Macroglossum stellatarum“. It does not bite. This Internet is really useful
Here’s the link to the german wikipedia.
U995
The german submarine U995 is open for visits in Laboe. We were lucky enough to be in the boat when it was closing time and got half-a-guided visit by the staff lady which wanted to lock the doors

Between 50 and 60 men for three months with one restroom.
Kieler Förde
A “Förde” is sort of a bay, only that it’s typically reaching deeper into the land. It’s rather on the Fjord side of things.
Kiel has a port and heavy industry on the waterside – we took a boat trip out to Laboe where a submarine can be visited.
Other submarines are in construction:

Schleswig-Flensburg
For foreigners almost unpronounceable, the region in which I grew up is called “Schleswig-Flensburg”. Being the border region to denmark it suffered the fate of border regions and was swapped back and forth between Denmark and Germany a few times.

I like to understand what’s on flags, so here you have two of the three lions the danish kingdom shows on its flags. The two colours indicate the historical region of Schleswig, which is almost identical to today’s administrative area.
Dog on the bridge
I asked him to sit (sit means sit!) but that did not work out too well. He seems to know when sit is sit and make the difference to “sit so I can take some pictures”. I was pretty surprised the other day when I wanted to go to ride with the motorbike. When I go down to dress up, he gets all excited and wants to come along. In the very moment I took my motorcycle pants off the hook, he went into his corner and laid down..the old boy has understood that I won’t take him with me on the bike
Long Exposure
If you want to learn how to take pictures, go to the extremes. Play, try to set exposure to the minimum and to the maximum, adjust the aperture, and so on.
I did not play with long exposure for some time and wanted to get some water in motion. Today we went down to the Usses and I took the grey filter (-4), the polarizer (-1) and the uv0 filter with me; overall, enough to allow me to take long exposures even in bright daylight:
That’s the same place with “how the automatic would take the picture”:
